Although the move in third year is towards composite digital presentation, hand drawing is still considered the fundamental way of communicating your ideas.
Project Three

Important Recent Architecture – Charcoal

Introduction:

Although the move in third year is towards composite digital presentation, hand drawing is still considered the fundamental way of communicating your ideas. The aim is to encourage and nurture different methods which have different expressive qualities and moods. Practice is the only way of mastering these.

The content will also be geared towards either integrating with the Studio course or exposing you to a range of influences, or both – the projects aren’t seen in isolation. Here the intention is to point to significant recent architecture that could inform and broaden your own design vocabulary.

The medium today is charcoal which, although quite forgiving, makes a strong impact that has to be carefully controlled.

Task:

Find an image of your allocated building that is complete but detailed, with some context. From a photocopy of this view, draw the building to a larger scale on newsprint, in charcoal, with as much detail as the medium allows.

Focus on the following:

Composition – fill the page.

Perspective and proportion – use the picture frame and your hand to get these right.

Generate vanishing points to structure your task.

Plan ahead with light guidelines before you tackle any detail work.

Consider light and shadow, and how charcoal could work on a ‘taking away’, rather than ‘adding to’ basis.

Use the shape of the charcoal – flat to indicate tone, sharp edge to show detail lines. Don’t ‘smudge’.

Remember that charcoal is messy…

Format:

Drawn on A1 newsprint in charcoal (all provided), orientated to suit the view.

Submission:

Submit the work at 17h00 on Level 8, for pinning up in the corridor for all to admire.

Take a neat photograph of your work and submit it to the blog at: large.co.za

Assessment:

The tutorial will be assessed as a segment of the Visual Communication component of the Design and Technology 3A course. It will receive a symbol grading (from A+ downwards).

The Buildings:

Apart from a few slightly older examples, the buildings on this list are taken from the following two books:

Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture

Phaidon Atlas of 20th Century World Architecture

Your brief is to submit 3x Rendered views in response to your Design brief. Please consider the use of lighting in your renders, and keep them simple. The form is what is important here, not the context. The context should be considered in your planning and in your final 3D views for presentation purposes.
This is what I believe is a tasteful and powerful conceptual render:

Roof plan of proposed additions to Centenary Building

Proposal:

Draw a fully annotated roof plan of your new design showing ridges, valleys, gutters, downpipes, full bores, rainwater heads, roofing and waterproofing materials & pitches, and (for flat roofs) screed falls with maximum & minimum screed thicknesses. In the case of trusses, show a cut away in one section of the roof with truss & purlin positions, sizes and spacing.
Focus on the following:

Because of the often rather inflexible geometry of roofs, they have to be considered during the design stage of any new project.
If your building falls down your engineer will get sued. If it leaks, you will. You have to be competent at designing a roof that will remove all rainwater from above your structure in a functional manner.
Roofs are often “left to sort themselves out”. You will be marked according to your grasp of how the roof is constructed and functions successfully. Convey this.
If there are details that are needed, circle these areas and cross reference the detail with where it can be found in your working drawings.
Submission is to be on one A1 sheet with a professional, complete title block.

Programme:

Submission: Tuesday 13/09

Hand-in at 18h40 Tuesday 13/09, at the lecture.
